Our first annual West Coast 5K fun run/walk took place at beautiful Carlsbad, California and it was a huge success. There was over 190 registered participants including 32 survivors coming from the states of California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Washington and British Columbia. Thousands of dollars were raised for research.

The 5K started at Aqua Hedionda Lagoon on the North Shore Hubbs Trail and ended at the Discovery Center. A shuttle bus was provided to drive participants back to the starting point.

Participants took part in a warm up led by Teresa Kimmitt from the Oceanside Jazzercise Center. Matt Baylow, meteorologist from CBS News 8 San Diego was our emcee and predicted great weather! 20151003_D800_scadaddle_carlsbad6725 Survivors were acknowledged by the rest of the participants prior to the beginning of the 5K. At the end of the 5K, participants enjoyed refreshments, a silent auction and visited booths from several sponsors. They also had access to the Discovery Center and Agua Hedionda Lagoon.

A special thank you to survivors Erin Balough, Raylene Davis, Karyn Kiefer, Ellen Robin (committee lead), Wini Rumis and Tina Smith who spent many hours planning this very successful event.

SCADaddle for Research SCADaddle for Research West Coast Sponsors were secured to help defray costs and raise additional money. SCADaddle organizers obtained food and items for the silent auction from merchants to add to the festivities.

Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program Presentation

A highpoint for survivors and others interested in learning more about SCAD included the research presentation, which followed at the Discovery Center. This year attendees enjoyed hearing about the latest research findings from Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) SCAD Research Program’s cardiologist Dr. Sharonne Hayes, SCAD research team lead and chair of our scientific advisory committee. Dr. Hayes opened the floor up for questions afterwards.

Special Activities for Survivors

Survivors and their supporters connected with each other informally during the social on Friday evening and enjoyed helping Ellen celebrate her birthday on Saturday evening. Click Reunions for a recap and pictures.
