It’s our 7th annual chip-timed run/walk to raise money for much needed research on the #1 cause of heart attacks in women under age 50 – spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD).

SCAD is a cause of a heart attack not associated with the typical risk factors of heart disease. It strikes without warning when a sudden tear occurs within the layers of one or more coronary arteries, blocking blood flow to the heart. SCAD is also the #1 cause of heart attacks in women who are pregnant and new moms. Although less common, SCAD can affect men too. SCAD can recur and it can be fatal.

Dr. Sharonne Hayes, SCAD Research Program team lead at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), will be joining us along with other Mayo SCAD researchers and will present their latest research findings after the 5K.

In past years, participants have joined us from across the USA and Canada, as well as Sweden.

Unable to Attend and Want to Support

If you are unable to join us in person at our National/Chicago area 5K or one of our other 5Ks, you can be with us in “spirit” by registering as a virtual participant. Virtual participants have joined us on treadmills, walking or running in their neighborhoods, or just reaching out to friends and family while raising money for SCAD Research! Participating virtually gives you the flexibility to choose a different date or time if you prefer.

When you register as a virtual participant, you will have an opportunity to set up a personal fundraising page to send to family/friends/co-workers asking them to support you. There is no cost to participate virtually or to form a virtual team. Virtual participants do not receive a 5K t-shirt. 5K t-shirts can be purchase at our SCAD Store beginning mid March.

Virtual Participant Registration

And, of course, you can Donate directly to SCAD Research, Inc.

We offer a variety of sponsorship opportunities. If you know of a potential sponsor and would like assistance in securing them, please contact us at 5K@scadresearch.org.
