West Coast SCADaddle

2017 West Coast SCADaddle crossing finish line
2017 West Coast SCADaddle lunch

Our third annual 5K fun run/walk in Carlsbad CA took place on September 9 and was a great success. Tens of thousands of dollars were raised for much needed research!

The weekend began on Friday, Sept. 8 with a Meet & Greet for survivors, their supporters and families whose loved ones did not survive. Bob Alico, founder of SCAD Research, welcomed survivors and talked about future plans. He accepted a donation from survivor Theresa Cole’s daughter whose school had a Penny Drive and raised $800 for SCAD Research.

It was a very busy and rewarding day: The planning committee began setting up at 5:30 am; registration began at 8 and the 5K at 9. Over 290 people participated in the 5K including 58 survivors from across the US and Canada, who attended the many events throughout the weekend. We were excited that three male survivors participated this year. Survivor Danielle Posner, who had a SCAD at age 20 while skiing with her family in Colorado, shared her story prior to the start of the 5K.

As participants approached the finish line they were cheered on by Carlsbad HS Cheerleader. As they crossed the finish line they received a uniquely designed participation medal. A silent auction, complimentary lunch by Ceja’s Mexican Diner & Grill and music by Bach to Rock Music School added to the festivities.

SCAD Insights Shared by Mayo Clinic and Stanford University Medical Center

At 1 pm Dr. Sharonne Hayes from Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program (Rochester, MN) and Dr. Jennifer Tremmel from Stanford University Medical Center (Stanford, CA) shared their insights about SCAD. Dr. Hayes chairs our Scientific Advisory Committee; Dr. Tremmel recently joined our Scientific Advisory Committee. Their presentation was streamed live and will be posted on our YouTube channel in the near future.

A SCAD Reunion dinner took place Saturday evening. Survivors not only had an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, they were also challenged to share what SCAD taught them about themselves.
